If a passenger is travelling with an infant or small child, he/she should be aware of the fact that proper use of a Child Restraint System (CRS) focuses on child safety on aircraft. Southwest airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advise that small children and infant who weigh 40 pounds or less should be secured in a proper CRS while travelling.

Flying With Babies on a Domestic Flight

  • One child of over 14 days old and under 2 years of age, who fits on the lap and don’t occupy an extra seat may be carried free of charge while travelling with an adult of minimum 12 years of age or older.
  • A boarding pass is not required for the infant or lap babies.
  • Flying with an infant or small kid requires Boarding Verification Document.

Babies in an Faa-approved Car Seat

  • An infant or small kids fares are available that enable a passenger to reserve a seat for your small baby.
  • For this, a boarding pass is required.
  • Online check-in is available in case infant fare is age verified.

Southwest boarding pass policy while travelling with babies

If a passenger chooses to purchase an extra seat for the baby, you require a boarding pass for an infant. If you have purchased an infant fare then you may use online check-in option if your baby has been age verified. If a baby is not age verified, you will not be able to use online check-in.

If a passenger chooses to travel with an infant on his/her lap, then no boarding pass is required. However, you require a boarding verification document (BVD) for the baby. BVD is available at the Southwest Airlines Ticket Counter on the day of flight departure.
